Tom Cruise shocking decision over eye contact. During a recent conversation at the New York Indian Film Festival, filmmaker Mira Nair and actress Shabana Azmi delved into the importance of actors grounding themselves in reality. The discussion took a surprising turn when Nair revealed a fascinating tidbit about Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, claiming he has a contract clause prohibiting people from looking him in the eye on film sets.
The conversation began with Shabana explaining her approach to staying connected to the real world while inhabiting fictional characters on screen. Nair then interjected, stating, "Tom Cruise has in his contract that you cannot meet his eyes. You’re not allowed to look at him in the eyes.”
Shabana, visibly surprised, asked, "Why?" to which Nair responded, "I don’t know! But it’s in the contract, I’m telling you. Serious. Maybe he believes that his energy will be sapped by people, maybe he wants to save it for the screen. I don’t know. But this is true.”
Nair's revelation sparked further intrigue as she explained, "The actors and directors can (look at him). But not aam log (common people). I’m telling you. Anyway, this might have changed. I shouldn’t be talking so much about somebody I’ve only just seen and not been able to see... But in any case, it is true.”
The revelation led to a discussion on the importance of actors remaining grounded. Shabana, echoing Nair's sentiment, shared her perspective on maintaining energy throughout a long acting career. “An actor's resource base has to be life,” she said. “When you’re alive to everything happening around you, that is the fuel, that is the experience. Because what happens with stars is that as they become bigger and bigger, they move away from life completely. They get into an ivory tower, and there’s no chance of having even the slightest contact with the real world.”
While Tom Cruise's alleged contract clause raises eyebrows, it also serves as a potent reminder of the often-fragile connection between actors and the everyday world.
