Star filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away

Shyam Benegal, known for his acclaimed films, passed away leaving everyone in a state of shock. Shyam Benegal, 90 year old had been suffering from kidney related problems.

Shyam Benegal on 14 December celebrated his birthday and the tragic news of Shyam Benegal passing away had been confirmed by his daughter Pia Benegal. Shyam Benegal born on 14 December 1934 was born in Hyderabad went on to successful films like Manthan, Zubeidaa and Sardaari Begum.

Benegal was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. Shyam Bengal's notable works include Ankur, Manthan, Mandi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Zubeidaa, Well Done Abba etc.

Shyam Benegal made the first film using a camera gifted by his father at the age of 12 years old. Shyam Benegal  hailed from a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family. His father, Sridhar B. Benegal, originally from Karnataka, was a photographer.
