Profile of new Chief Minister

Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy the new Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh was born to former Congress party minister  N Amarnath Reddy.

Mr KK Reddy hails from Chittoor district.

Date and Place Of Birth: September 13, 1960, born in Hyderabad. 

Educational Qualification: B. Com., LLB, elected four terms to Assembly.

He did his schooling from Hyderabad Public school and intermediate from St Josephs' Junior College, Hyderabad.

N Kiran Kumar Reddy was elected from Pileru Assembly Constituency, Chittoor district in 2009 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Elections.

After Mr K Rosaiah submitted his resignation to Governor ESL Narasimhan, Mr KK Reddy was seen as the first choice to the Congress High Command as his successor.

Mr KK Reddy is the 16th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

Mr KK Reddy was elected as Speaker of the 13th Andhra Pradesh Assembly. He had vowed to be non-partisan in discharging his duties.

His decisive streak was well evident in his tussles with his family’s arch rivals as well as his battles with the Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu, who hails from the same district.

Interestingly, the B Com and LLB graduate was also a star cricketer in the Nizam College team and was wicket keeper and captain of the under 25 state team. It was under him that the former Indian cricket star, Mohammed Azharuddin, played.

His father, Nallari Amarnath Reddy, was a minister in Congress Cabinets from 1978 to 1982. Mr KK Reddy was first elected to AP Legislative Assembly from Vayalpadu constituency of Chittoor district in 1989.

Though he tasted defeat in the 1994 elections, he was again elected to the Assembly in 1999 and 2004. He also successfully contested from Piler segment in 2009 polls.

During the rule of the late chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy from 2004 to 2009, Mr KK Reddy functioned as Government Chief Whip with Cabinet minister’s status.

After the 2009 elections, he was elected Speaker though he was expecting a Cabinet berth. Though he accepted the Speaker post with much reluctance, it helped Mr KK Reddy to develop a good rapport with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her political secretary Ahmed Patel and senior leaders including Pranab Mukherjee and P Chidambaram.

This has now proved fruitful. A strong integrationist, Mr KK Reddy impressed the High Command by his deft handling of the crisis caused after 143 MLAs of all political parties resigned after the Centre announced the Telangana state on December 9, 2009.

The only drawback is that he has not worked as minister and is directly occupying the Chief Minister’s chair like the late NT Rama Rao did in 1983.

Mr KK Reddy’s name for the Speaker's post was proposed by the then chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Praja Rajyam Party president K Chiranjeevi, AIMIM Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, Agriculture Minister N Raghuveera Reddy and two other independents.

Soon after his election, Reddy was accompanied to the Speaker's chair by the then chief minister, PRP chief, MLA Jayaprakash Narayan and Owaisi.

The main opposition TDP, which expressed reservations over Reddy's candidature, stayed away from accompanying him to the Speaker's chair.

He was government Chief Whip in the previous Assembly and served as member of the Public Undertakings Committee and Assurance Committee.

His father was considered close to late Indira Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao.
