Lamenting that the Legislative bodies have totally failed in redressing problems being faced by the people, Lok Satta Party president Jayaprakash Narayan on Tuesday asked the people’s representatives to act responsibly and desist from resorting to dharnas and rallies on every issue.

Talking to media persons at Assembly Media Point, the LSP chief opined that the dharnas should be held as a last resort and not to press the administration on every issue.

“If the elected representatives resort to staging dharnas and rallies on various issues without discussing these, the Legislative bodies lose their sheen,” Dr Narayan stated. This, he said would defeat the very purpose behind the setting up of Legislative bodies.

The former IAS officer said that the Constitutionally set up Legislative bodies have to function responsibly and so that people’s issues could be discussed and addressed.

“If the members elected by the people fail to address their problems, it means that the Constitution has failed. This is contrary to the democratic system,” the LSP chief pointed out.

He asked the people’s representatives to act in a responsible manner and discuss the people’s problems in a congenial atmosphere. Dr Narayan said the Assembly’s Budget Session is similar to the Winter Session of Parliament, which was more or less paralysed by the opposition which was demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into 2G Spectrum scam and no business could be transacted.

Dr Narayan said the Legislatures should immediately address the Telangana issue as the proceedings were being stalled daily. “The government should not delay it. It should act immediately and take a final decision on Telangana state,” the LSP chief stated.

He hailed the Centre’s decision to agree for JPC probe into 2G Spectrum scam. Similarly the state government should table a resolution on the Telangana issue so that the Assembly be allowed to function smoothly, Dr Narayan said.

Hailing the Supreme Court’s directions to the state government on the fee reimbursement issue, the former bureaucrat urged the government to act in a responsible manner and pay the dues of Rs 2,400 crore to colleges.

He asked the state government to set up training institutions for engineering students to help them to establish industries so that they stand on their feet.
