More unaccounted cash seized in Badvel check-post

Badvel Police on Saturday seized unaccounted cash of Rs 3 lakh from a business man and sarees worth more than Rs 3 lakh at TP Kunta Check Post in Gopavaram mandal in Kadpa district.

According to Inspector K Ullafaiah the cash was being transported in a car which was stopped and checked by personnel manning the check post.

The car was being driven by a business man, who was identified as Prattipadu Vengaiah (60), a resident of Vinjapuram in Nellore district. Vengaiah claimed that he was heading towards Sanga Reddy in Medak district to purchase bricks for his business.

Vengaiah said that he has drawn the said amount from the Andhra Pragathi Bank in Vinjapuram. However, when asked to produce the relevant documents to back his claim, he failed to do so, Mr Ullafaiah stated.

The Inspector further disclosed that the cash was seized and handed over to the Income Tax department for further investigations.

Some time later in the evening, the police personnel manning the check-post also seized an auto-rickshaw which was carrying sarees worth more than Rs 3 lakh.

The auto-rickshaw driver told the police that the sarees were procured from the textile industries in Nellore district. The driver also said that he was taking the consignment to Badvel. However, the consignment was seized after he failed to produce proper documents, or the consignment form from the relevant industries.

Mr Ullafaiah said that so far, cash amounting to Rs 1.1 crore has been seized since the Election Code came into effect at the check-post.

Earlier on April 18, police personnel seized around Rs 4.95 lakh in cash from a doctor Muralidhar, who produced the fake documents when he was questioned about the source.

The police had also seized Rs 55 Lakh from a person who is suspected to be close to an MLA from Nellore, on April 12, 2011. The cash was being transported in a car which was stopped and checked by the police personnel at the check-post. The driver of the car, along with 2 more persons, was detained and interrogated.

A day earlier, another car had been stopped and searched at the Pipikunta check-post in Gopavaram mandal had yielded cash amounting to Rs 28 lakh.
