Proddatur police on Tuesday seized unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 3.17 lakh from two persons at the Railway Gate check post near Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district.

According to Inspector Janardhan Naidu, the police team conducting the searches as part of their attempts to stem the free flow of money during the by-election campaigning, stopped two persons Dastagiri and Maheshwar who were trying to avoid the checking.

The police managed to detain and search them, leading to the discovery of the money, Mr Naidu disclosed.

The Inspector said that the answers given to the police team by the two men were unconvincing. He revealed that Dastagiri claimed that Rs 1.9 lakh in cash was to purchase some gold in Proddatur, while Maheshwar claimed that the Rs 1.27 lakh found on his person was being taken to deposit in a bank. Maheshwar further said that the money was from his petroleum business.

Unconvinced on their replies, the police asked them to produce the necessary documents to back their claims, but they failed to do so.

The cash has been seized and handed over to the Income Tax Department for further investigations.

Earlier on April 23, Badvel police had seized unaccounted cash of Rs 3 lakh from a business man and sarees worth more than Rs 3 lakh at TP Kunta Check Post in Gopavaram mandal in Kadpa district.

Some time later in the same evening, the police manning the check-post also seized an auto-rickshaw which was carrying sarees worth more than Rs 3 lakh.

The police claim that over Rs 1.3 crore has been seized from the checkposts from the time the Election Code came into effect.
