Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee leaders on Saturday demanded that Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal order immediate steps to curb attacks on VIPs campaigning for the Congress party by YSR Congress party workers.
APCC vice-president Madasu Gangadhar, MLC and general secretary Rudraraju Padmaraju and general secretary Gidugu Rudra Raju on Saturday met the CEO at his chambers in the Secretariat and lodged a formal complaint with him.
Later, they told media persons that Praja Rajyam Party leader K Chiranjeevi, who was in Kadapa for campaigning was attacked by Mr Jaganmohan Reddy's henchmen with eggs and shoes creating terror in the constituency.
They asked the CEO to take steps to prevent such attacks by Mr Jaganmohan Reddy’s followers.
The Congress leaders informed the CEO that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was likely to visit Kadapa shortly and asked the former to apprehend the culprits who were indulging in such undemocratic activities.
Mr Bhanwar Lal was asked to initiate action against Mr YS Jaganmohan Reddy for violating the Election Code. The CEO was also asked to instruct the district administration to check such activities by the YSR Congress Party.
Clippings of pamphlets circulated along with the Sakshi newspaper in Kadapa and the Congress candidate DL Ravindra Reddy’s complaint to the district Returning Officer were also produced before the CEO.
