Decision on resignations by Aug 1: LS Speaker

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Friday stated that she would take a final decision on the resignations of Telangana MPs by August 1.

Talking to media persons, Ms Meira Kumar said that she had received the resignations of 13 MPs from Telangana, adding that she would individually take the opinions of these MPs before deciding whether to accept the resignations.

The 13 MPs, cutting across party lines, had submitted their resignations demanding that Centre begin the process towards formation of separate state. Nine of these MPs are from the Congress, two from Telangana Rashtra Samithi and two are from the Telugu Desam Party.

The Lok Sabha Speaker said that she would take the opinion of MPs individually before accepting of their resignations to ascertain whether they had resigned due to pressure mounted on them or had taken the decision to quit Parliament voluntarily.

Ms Meira Kumar emphasized that said that she would take a final decision on the resignations by August 1. “The decision on resignations will be taken before the beginning of the Monsoon Session of Parliament,” she stated.
