SC rejects Jagan's bail petition

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the bail petition of Ysr Congress party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy in the disproportionate assets case.

The petition was rejected by a bench of Justice Aftab Alam and Justice Prakash Desai. Jagan, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on May 27 for allegedly amassing wealth through illegal means, moved the Supreme Court for bail against the Andhra Pradesh High Court order, which denied him relief in the case on July 4. His petition came up for trial on September 14 and further hearing on the case was adjourned to September 28.

The CBI, represented by Additional Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran and senior lawyer Ashok Bhan, opposed Jagan's bail expressing apprehensions that he might influence the witnesses if released on bail. However, Jagan's counsels Gopal Subramaniam and D Vishwanathan claimed that the CBI has leveled baseless charges against Jaganmohan Reddy.

After hearing the arguments from both the sides, the Supreme Court on Friday rejected Jagan's bail petition. The 40-year-old MP is lodged in Chanchalguda Central Jail since his arrest.
