Union Government has been censoring films watched by people spending more than hundreds of rupees. Censoring of films has been in existence even during the British rule. Now many wonder what exactly is the secret reason behind censoring of films.
As freedom movement showing its firepower, Britishers got scared that Indian filmmakers through their films may instigate movie lovers and people against the British rule. So they announced that each and every film will be reviewed and censored before screening.
When the freedom movement was at its heights, Sarathi Studios came up with Malapilla with director Gudavalli Rmabrahmam. Later they came with Rythu Bidda, opposing the landlords. What came as surprise was the film was produced by Challapalli Jamindar Raja Yarlagadda Sivarama Prasad.
During that time Venkatagiri jamindars burnt the prints. They used their influence and got the film banned in Nellore and Krishna districts with the help of magistrates. However British government gave green signal to the film as it did not contain any thing against them.
Even after independence, Censor Board continued to have the same rules. It followed that the films shouldn't criticise the government, shouldn't show government employee receiving bribes, unmarried woman becoming pregnant and nude scenes.
These continued for many years and Censor Board objected when Rajkapoor showed Padmini's nude back in the 60s. Only after Rajkapoor argued with proofs that tribal women wear only such dresses in real life, Censor Board passed the film Jis Desh Mein Ganga Bahti Hai.
Later for some reasons Censor Board became liberal. It didnot oppose even when Mandakini's top assets were shown in Rajkapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Zeenat Aman in half nude in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. Later nude scenes, liplocks, sex scenes became common and Censor Board started turning a blind eye.
Censor Board banned Kursi, opposing the then PM Indira Gandhi during emergency and later banned many films that opposed the then governments. Now Censor Board needn't ban even those films as numerous channels are criticising governments all the time. Politicians are hurling obscene abuses and wonder whether Censor Board allow such dialogues in the films. Under these circumstances one feels not films but TV channels should have censor.
