Here is a crucial update on Andhra Pradesh's local body polls. The election schedule for Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs), Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) and municipalities is likely to be unveiled on March 7.
The AP government is learnt to have decided to conduct MPTC and ZPTC polls in two phases, i.e., on 21st and 24th of this month respectively. On the other side, municipal elections schedule is likely to be locked on 27th of March.
On Friday, the AP Election Commissioner held an all party meet and invited the views of various political parties on the proposed election schedule. He said the EC would consider SSC examinations and the impact of Corona Virus before releasing the election schedule. By the same token, he made it clear that the AP government had assured the EC to defer the SSC examinations.
In the meanwhile, the government has confirmed 50% quota so as to ensure the supreme court's verdict is implemented in urban and rural bodies. The government is determined to complete entire poll process by this month end to enable Rs.5000 crore union government's funds are received without any hiatus.
