Theaters Allowed To Reopen From Oct 1st There, But

West Bengal government has allowed opening of Cinema Halls and open air theatres from October 1, conditional on adherence to physical distancing norms, wearing of masks and obedience to precautionary measures. Only 50 or less people per show are allowed.

“To return to normalcy, Jatras, Plays, OATs, Cinemas and all musical, dance, recital and magic shows shall be allowed to function with 50 participants or less from 1 Oct, subject to adherence to physical distancing norms, wearing of masks & compliance to precautionary protocols,” West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Twitter.

The question is does this model really work for exhibitors and distributors. Usually, theaters capacity will be in some hundreds and allowing only 50 people will not work out for people associated with the business. On the other hand, if ticket rates are hiked, Cinema Halls won’t see even those 50 people. It seems this experiment may not work out.

Cinema Halls have remained shut since the nationwide coronavirus lockdown began in late March. Central government should come up with a perfect plan that will benefit producers, distributors and exhibitors!
