Tirupathi, July 18:-
The age-old issue of poor quality food being served at hostel messes surfaced again in Sri Venkateswara University premises on Saturday.
Tension gripped in Sri Venkateswara University premises when a hostel worker assaulted a student for questioning poor quality food being served at hostel mess.
The students are up in arms and blamed lack of vigilance on the part of hostel wardens and inspections by university authorities for the sad state of affairs.
The students, carrying banners and placards, raised several issues such as cleanliness, recruitment of new warden, rude beahaviour of the mess worker and clerks, among others.
“The food served at our mess is worst among all hostels. Many students from here go to other canteens for having food,” the students alleged.
"There is a drastic need to change the menu. They have a fixed menu for all the seven days of the week and repeat it every week,” some students said.
The students demand that a meeting of representatives of hostel canteens, students and university authorities be conducted every month to discuss various issues and to upgrade the culinary skills of cooks, who prepare food for hundreds of students every day.
The University Vice-Chancellor Prabhakar Rao said that action would be taken against mess worker based on hostel warden report. Steps would be taken to improve quality in food being supplied to students in hostels, he added.
