A lot of cricket fans, upset at England’s win, have pointed out on social media that the team was “hardly English” or “not English enough”. Of course, they point to Dublin-born Eoin Morgan, the team’s captain who played for Ireland till 10 years ago, and 24-year-old fast bowling sensation Jofra Archer, who wasn’t even a UK citizen until two months ago. Jason Roy, the star of the English top order, was born a South African, much like his teammate Tom Curran.

Star all-rounder Ben Stokes was born in New Zealand's Christchurch in 1991. A little over 28 years later, he played a crucial role for England as the country for his birth suffered a major heartbreak in the final of the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Stokes was named man-of-the-match for smashing an unbeaten 84 to steer England's chase of 242 against the Black Caps.

While Ben Stokes’ tremendous contribution to England’s World Cup win was being celebrated by more than a fair few, his father Gerard Stokes has been fielding a few jibes about being "the most hated father in New Zealand."

"I really am disappointed for the Black Caps; it's such a shame someone had to walk away without the trophy. Hand on heart, I am overjoyed for Ben and the team, but I am still a New Zealand supporter," said Gerard Stokes.
