Saheba Subramanyam Review

Behind the Movie Saheba Subramanyam: Top comedian MS Narayana’s daughter Sasi Kiran Narayana’s directorial debut is the major pulling factor for this film starring Dilip Kumar, Priyal Gor. Let us see, what is this wrong combination of Muslim Saheba and Hindu Subramanyam?

In the Movie Saheba Subramanyam: Actual story takes off with an interesting discussion between Police Officer Krishna Manohar (Rao Ramesh) and a student union member Subramanyam aka Subbu (Dilip Kumar) where in the latter narrates romantic flashback. Subbu hails from a middle class Hindu Nair family is attracted to Saheba from childhood and wishes to marry her at right age. As time passes on, Subbu falls flat for Saheba (Priyal Gor) seeing her at a wedding function. Saheba hails from orthodox Muslim family headed by father Rahman (Narsh) and his brother Khadar (Nagineedu). After lots of efforts, Saheba also likes Subbu but was feared of the religious differences.  On the other side, Subbu and students union is fighting against the same Rahman to close their polluting factory. What happened to Subbu and Saheba? How did Saheba’s parents react towards Subbu?

Values & Out of the Movie Saheba Subramanyam: Basic strength of this film is an innovative story line involving two lead characters from two religious groups. In fact, such a story touched earlier by Mani Ratnam with ‘Bombay’ is prone to heavy risk of raking controversies. However debutant Sasi Kiran dealt the entire plot so neatly untouched with any disputes. It is heard that, ‘SS’ is a remake of hit Malayalam film but the efforts of director to add the Telugu nativity factor should be commendable. Dialogues were definitely the other nerve of film. Direction wise, Sasi did not show the same acumen of first half in second half. Sai Prakash’s camera work is splendid. Visual beauty arrests the viewers to screens. Praveen Pudi’s editing should have been better in second half. Shaan Rahman’s musical score is decent and is one more department secured the good output. Production values of Nageshwara Rao and Indo English Productions are good.  

Performance wise, Dilip was not freely flowing. His mannerisms are confusing at times and he is surely not the best part of film. Priyal Gor is fine and all her small screen experience has come in handy on big screen. She kept the film alive with decent artistic skills. While Naresh and Nagineedu are regular, fun from Ragahvendra as friend to hero was hilariously conceived. Rao Ramesh always delivers the goods on time. Kondavalasa and others are also fine in their portions.

‘Saheba Subramanyam’ is a different love story which needed reasonably better presentation than this one. Being a debutant and got a remake film on hand, there was a scope for Sasi Kiran to develop the actual plot. Instead, she left the actual soul with artificiality creeping in characters. First half had some fun moments running with an interesting narration. Second half suffered with many drawbacks pulling the excitement down. There was actually a chemistry missing in romance of lead pair which made the film impaired. All in all, ‘Saheba Subramanyam’ introduced new talent of Sasi Kiran Narayana to Tollywood. Commercial result is strongly doubtful for all the centers.
